Ancient Armenian Acoustics - St. Hovhannes Church, Byurakan

The first recordings took place at St. Hovhannes Church in Byurakan, where both collective and intimate musical forms were explored. The Chartar Choir of the Real School was recorded in dialogue with the church’s interior, allowing the layered choral textures to interact with the space as a unified sonic body. Alongside this, a duet featuring Amalya Hakobyan (vocals and flute) and Maria Aristakesyan (cello) was performed, offering a contrast in scale and frequency range. The cello’s lower register and the clarity of the vocal and flute lines revealed how the church responds differently to sustained low frequencies versus more articulated high-frequency material, shaping a balanced yet nuanced acoustic character.
